Life with Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows (Part 3/3)
From her gradual ascent to stardom in the 1930s to her death from a drug overdose at age 47 in 1969, former vaudeville baby Frances Ethel Gumm, aka Judy Garland, endured a string of personal and career ups and downs that continues to color her reputation as an icon whose tragedies outweighed her triumphs. This TV biopic, based on the first half of daughter Lorna Luft's book Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir, attempts to humanize Garland's legend by presenting the singer/actress' story from an insider's point of view. People say Judy was weak to the drugs forget she actually successfully quit cold turkey several times, including all 3 pregnancies. The will power that takes is astronomical but it also can kill you (quitting barbiturates, alcohol and amphetamines alone can kill you let alone all 3 at once)

They left out the abortion she was forced to undergo during her short lived first marriage. And the studio advised her to smoke more than 80 cigarettes a day starting when she was 16 to keep her weight down.

The 80 cigarettes a day is an urban legend. Her singing voice would have been destroyed if she smoked those many cigarettes.

What they did to this women was disgusting. I worked in this business over the years and I am hear to tell you that it is cut throat! Even today , but the way they abused her and the shameful salary they gave her, for example on OZ, she only made $500 a week and the dog made more then her on set. For all her work and great talent she made $9,649 from "Oz", the same as $190k today, that’s not a lot for her talent and it’s a joke for this business. Then her mother took her money and her agents never went to jail for embezzling her money of whom she trusted. It’s quite disgusting but that’s this business….and she really did make the studio tens of millions and she died with a worth of only 40K. Yes sir! this rotten business is so bad that the people I trusted and believed in, that claimed to be born again Christians mind you, stabbed me in the back so they could climb the ladder above me. I am no longer in the business anymore thankfully because nobody is real. NOBODY!

Rainbow Trivia: at 5:36, the conductor of Judy Garland's orchestra named Charlie-- is a cameo by the film's actual composer and musical director Charlie Fox. Fox is a 2x Oscar nominated composer (Foul Play, 9-5, Barbarella) and writer of many hit songs including "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and the TV theme "Happy Days".

Sad how Judy was taken advantage of and robbed....the IRS didnt even leave her enough to live on and she would continue to push herself working. You have to really k now and trust who you put in charge of your money and finances.

Watching this on Freevie. I had to speed through it. I think it's the most boring film I've ever seen. but 1978? I'll cut it some slack. The lead actress is fantastic. (Annie) 😊 but this movie is the worst!!

Two singers that were the best (my opinion), were Judy Garland and Karen Carpenter. Both were tortured in life by demons and people, taken advantage of, looking for love, peace and acceptance! Every song they sung was filled with emotions that were evident on their face, especially in their eyes. Both left the world too soon but are now safe in the arms of God! Rest in peace

This production was well done. Judy Davis captures Judy's humor. Vocal inflections and gestures. Judy's gifts were from heaven, but her life on earth was hell. She worked like a dog, and everyone stole from her. Sid Luft gambled away her earnings and did not pay her taxes. He got her into serious debt with the IRS. Her addictions consumed her. She lost the Best Actress Oscar by five votes. She worked like a Trojan when Fields and Begelman resurrected her career. They both stole and embezzled from her. Begelman ripped her off for hundreds of thousands of dollars and also gambled away thousands using her salary as collateral at Vegas venues. She should have been able to stop working or stop touring. She should have been able to own her own home. Their treachery resulted in her losing her home, remaining in debt to the IRS, and becoming homeless and broke at the end of her life. Judy was, by nature, a sweet angel. However, she had another monstrous side that destroyed everyone and everything in her path. Her addictions created this destructive psychotic monster. Anyone close to her got burned. This included her children, lovers, friends, and work colleagues. Dealing with her was a 24/7 nightmare. Perhaps Luft, Begeleman, and Fields rationalized their stealing from her. Judy's ugly, destructive behaviors got her blacklisted from films and all three TV networks. She was placed on a "do not hire list" for TV guest shots or appearances. Many tried to help her but couldn't. Amazingly, she could do her work for as long as she did. Judy would be amazed at how much her fans loved her, and new generations of fans continue to love and appreciate her gifts. She should be remembered for her creative genius and not the devils of addiction which destroyed her.

Her whole story makes me sad. She seemed always like a scared little girl. Stage fright.... but usually once she hit the stage, she turned on her brilliant smile and the music poured out of her soul! I guess what's most heart breaking to me is that she lived to put a smile on OUR faces, yet nobody seemed to be there to put a real smile on her face. Hollywood and the lie of fame is NOT worth any of this. The stars usually don't keep a fraction of the money. Some fat disgusting Hollywood slob keeps the money. I guess if there's a good side to what happened to Judy Garland is that because of her, our world is brighter. I truly hope she's at peace and can feel love where she's at now. Thank you for sharing a little about Ms. Garland!
